JEREMY PELT: Soul
HighNote, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – OK, this is one of the better straightahead/postbop jazz records I’ve heard in a while. It’s mellow, deep, and gorgeous, reminding me of the sort of things Woody Shaw or George Cables were putting out in the 1980s. Pelt’s work on trumpet and flugelhorn is masterful in its quiet control. His quintet is seamless and simply superb. And the tunes – mostly ballads, by the way – have a serene elegance that gives this set a truly classic late-night feel. Fine stuff.

Jeremy Pelt : trumpet, flugelhorn
J.D. Allen : saxophone
Danny Grissett : piano
Dwayne Burno: bass
Gerald Cleaver : drums

All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8

1. 5:18 – so nice: relaxed & dusky, beautiful ensemble and soft, soulful solos
2. 6:21 – slow modal rise, beautiful and understated; piano acrobatics
3. 6:31 – easygoing sway, a slight air of mystery: fine solos all around
4. 8:36 – oblique Wayne Shorter-ish feel, drums push it from the background
5. 6:21 – a slow, very soulful drag with delicious horns and sophisticated piano
6. 3:47 – vocal by Joanna Pascale: gently drifting, very romantic
7. 11:20 – upbeat/offbeat Monkish walk, swinging modernist solos stretch out
8. 5:31 – warm trumpet melody, nice drum patter & pretty piano
