Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his elegant, lyrical violin concerto over six years. Its innovations (e.g., a written out cadenza; linking the mvmts) inspired other composers. It remains one of the most frequently performed. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his violin concerto, no less beautiful, and full of passion, in three weeks on the shores of Lake Geneva, where he had gone to recover from the depression caused by his disastrous marriage. At its 1881 premier, critic Eduard Hanslick wrote, “the violin was not played but beaten black and blue.” Still, the public has always loved this concerto dearly. Violinist Ray Chen won first prize at the Menuhin Competition (2008), and the Queen Elisabeth competition (2009) playing these concertos.
