Those Lavender Whales play goofy folk-rock or light-rock songs, with childish lyrics. It’s kind of a cross between Bare Naked Ladies and Raffi. RIYL Burl Ives children’s songs, Puff the Magic Dragon, etc. but with a weird sense of humor. Instrumentation includes accordion, banjo, strings, and electronic sounds. This is silly and fun. No FCC issues 1 First 30 seconds is an electric buzz, followed by a very silly song. (1:38) 2 * Mid-tempo. Very upbeat & fun. Children’s song lyric, folky instrumentation. (2:28) 3 * Mid-tempo. Two good male voices. Good electric guitar and organ. (2:34) 4 Mid-tempo. Gentle banjo, hard elec guitar, sleigh bells, Beach Boys-y harmony. (2:34) 5 Acoustic guitar & bells. Fretboard squeeks are as painful as blackboard scratching. (2:50) 6 ** Mid-fast. Good singing. Mult good guitar parts, and banjo. Less silly, still fun. (3:00) 7 Mid-tempo. Acoustic guitar & vox, then circus calliope, then fuzzy elec guitar. (2:59) 8 *Mid-tempo. Starts simple, quiet, quaint. Grows to be loud & powerful. Interesting. (3:29) 9 Fast. Hokey silliness done in a country style. (1:55) 10 ** Mid-tempo. Childish lyric, simplistic banjo picking, a plastic flute, some bad whistling. But it all adds up to be rather touching and heartfelt. (2:40) 11 * Mid-tempo. Miscellaneous silly sounds backed by rhythm guitar. Toward the end, a harder rock guitar. Worth a listen for the more adventurous. (2:51) 12 ** First half is flat & dull. Second half is pretty cool: an upbeat folk-rock song. (2:20) |
