Really interesting cross between the “Takoma School” of solo acoustic guitar (think: John Fahey) and singer songwriter fare. The majority are songs of the former, that with a dose of reverb and echo would have fit in easily with the Day of Noise roster. But several songs in Paul lays genuine feeling if slightly off-key vocals and a real “song” on us, and doesn’t stop there. The songs maintain the guitar’isms but the lyrics and feeling are dark dark dark. Heavy stuff (at least to me). Like Jeffrey Lee Pierce if he hadn’t up and died on us and instead made recordings in his old bedroom in his dad’s house. Some fine beautiful guitar playing and songwring.

1) (4:22) long strums start and glue this together, but theres lots of trippy picking etc, very Fahey, blends directly into next (fade out to avoid cold end)
2) (6:04) pretty with lots of picking and strums
3) (3:25) heres where things change to songs: a dramatic strings/synth intro then vocals appear, distant and pretty and understated, lovely, live recorded feel
4) (4:30) a more straight folk feel in the guitar to intro provides the soundbed for a dark sad song heavy as fuck song, wow
5) (4:46) slightly more upbeat standard guitar work
6) (5:19) slow swing strum with lyrics/singing, dark introspective lyrics, nice “I wonder what I would be if I wasn’t so paralyzed”, morose as Cobain, more so
7) (4:48) quiet fade-in, almost strummy, song with lyrics
8) (6:05) slow picking and lyrics, dark
9) (5:29) a lovely minor key open tuned ode to Fahey, very nice
10) (4:41) lots of nice Takoma guitar: finger picked pleasantry
11) (5:46) a seemingly upbeat picking song, pleasant and bright and pretty, of course until the heartache vocals and lyrics appear, whoa doggy this is music to slash your wrists to for sure, beautiful stuff
