STEVE LEHMAN TRIO: Dialect Fluorescent Pi, 2012 AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – Alto saxophonist Lehman brings his laser-etched, futuristic sound to three classic tunes as well as his usual spiky, chrome-shiny compositions. Bassist Matt Brewer’s thick, heavy lines are a perfect match, and Damion Reid’s dynamic drumming really expands and propels the tunes. Another great disc from Lehman. Try pairing this with Rudresh Mahanthappa for a dynamite one-two punch. Fo’s Picks: ALL 1. 3:09 – solo saxophone undulation with a few exotic thrusts 2. 4:07 – stuttering rhythm: sax pops with bright edge over a heavy spiral riff 3. 3:48 – Coltrane tune: bass anchors conversational sax, great interplay 4. 4:38 – uptempo sax/bass percolation, off-center drum beat 5. 6:54 – classic hardbop tune: a brisk walk with great inside/outside sax 6. 5:46 – unsteady forward motion as trio hops in tight formation 7. 6:09 – amazing transformation of a sappy movie ballad into brisk free-bop 8. 6:49 – bass solo sets up a very cool groove, sax sticks and releases 9. 3:57 – strong boppin’ swing (Jackie McLean tune) … pushes forward [ Fo ] - April 2012 |
