“Rock the Vote” EP We Are Augustines
We Are Augustines released this four-song EP in early spring 2012 in conjunction with the Rock the Vote movement. The three-piece, Brooklyn-based indie rock/alternative rock band had a very successful first release in 2011 with its “Rise Ye Sunken Ships” LP. One track on the EP — “Chapel Song” is taken from that first release. Another — “Book of James” — is an acoustic version of a song from “Rise…”. All the tracks on the EP are highlighted by Billy McCarthy’s distinctive, emotive vocals. The band experienced a turbulent birth, with two of the three band members emerging from the implosion of predecessor, Pela, timed with the suicide of McCarthy’s brother, James, who suffered from schizophrenia and had been in solitary confinement in a California prison for 5 years.

Recommended: All FCC clean.
1. (4:33) Book of James (Acoustic) — Strummy acoustic sound. Spoken vocals a la Bruce Springsteen. Song is a tribute to vocalist Billy McCarthy’s brother, James, who committed suicide while the band was working on the album. ****
2. (3:44) Under a Country Moon — Mid-tempo. Ringing electric guitar and drum triplets supporting strong vocal. ***
3. (3:42) Ohio — Story-telling lyrics and almost a folk-rock feel. ***
4. (3:09) Chapel Song — Driving alternative rock. Edgy vocals. Great! ****
