CONRAD HERWIG: The Tip of the Sword
RadJazz, 2012

POSTBOP – Strong set of original material from trombonist Herwig, who’s perhaps best known for his Latin reimagining of jazz classics. This is completely different: a razor-sharp, highly improvisational trio with Richie Bierach on piano and the great Jack DeJohnette on drums. The overall mood is rather dark, and the playing runs from a low simmer to a high boil, neatly balanced between structure and freedom.

All interesting. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6

1. 6:49 – uptempo, breathless churn: direction uncertain but interplay is strong
2. 7:12 – slow drift: trombone stretches, classical piano feel, mercurial drums
3. 6:28 – energetic, bustling trio: drums & piano push the trombone really hard
4. 7:31 – slow & fluid: piano & trombone float in empty space, soft cymbals
5. 6:51 – great drums: a melodic track but still open, bright & optimistic
6. 7:07 – melancholy piano intro; trombone is solemn but sings to the sky
7. 6:38 – floating, shapeless trio: trombone moans, others step carefully
