BRIAN HO: Organic
self-released, 2012

ORGAN JAZZ – Debut recording by a San Jose based player (he gigs regularly in Palo Alto). This is a classic organ combo, a mix of hardbop and soul-jazz with Calvin Keys on guitar, plus tenor sax & drums. Ho’s organ is a new Hammond XK, not a classic B3, but it sounds pretty much the same, maybe a little more crisp & bright. There are several original tunes here, but they all have a classic approach, and an Amy Winehouse cover (#4) fits in surprisingly well. Fun stuff all around.

All nice. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 8

1. 4:37 – rolling, classic hardbop sound: organ & guitar solos ride the groove
2. 4:54 – upbeat drums and perky sax lead a happy march; good fun
3. 8:23 – Horace Silver soul-jazz anthem, glides without friction, slinky solos
4. 3:27 – brisk, bouncy soul strut: catchy theme and brief, popping solos
5. 5:00 – cute soul-bossa theme; solos are relaxed and right in the pocket
6. 3:27 – funky ditty: odd theme plays with time, sax digs into it
7. 3:08 – standard ballad: organ is deep and rich, sax & guitar are lovely
8. 4:44 – nice rolling groove, feels like a road song; organ & guitar dive in
