MARIANNE SOLIVAN: Prisoner of Love
Hipnotic, 2012
JAZZ VOCALS – This is an impressive debut. Solivan has a warm, flexible alto voice and a classic, no-bullshit approach that has both style and substance. How refreshing! She’s joined by several top-rate players in a set that’s heavy on standards but avoids the obvious. The rapport is strong, and the intimate settings make it even sweeter.
Marianne Solivan : vocals
Peter Bernstein: guitar
Xavier Davis, Michael Kanan : piano
Christian McBride, Ben Wolfe : bass
Johnathan Blake : drums
Jeremy Pelt: trumpet
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11
1. 3:33 – soaring midtempo ballad, very nice guitar & bass
2. 4:15 – a deep ache with lovely piano trio; piano and vocals surge
3. 3:41 – vocal/bass duet, so good! Some light scatting & solid bass
4. 6:06 – slow intro with piano, then heartfelt ballad with trio, fine vocals
5. 3:26 – heartbreaking duet with piano; a great song that’s rarely performed
6. 4:43 – sexy stroll with great bass, guitar & lo-fi trumpet
7. 3:43 – duet with guitar, shows off her voice very nicely
8. 5:21 – big sashaying swing with trio, sassy vocals come in late
9. 3:20 – duet with bass: unusual intro, settles into rich harmony
10. 4:22 – cabaret-style duet ballad with piano
11. 2:44 – upbeat stroll, vocals dig in with a solid trio swing
