GG King "Joyless Masturbation" b/w " Bag" 7" 45 rpm / Total Punk Records|
This here's a 45 of a power pop/punk quintet., and a lovely portrait of 'em that they sent w/ it is on the back of our copy. They present us with good hooks, a tight interaction of the band members, in that they sound like they actually know how to play in a musically-adept manner, without losing that edgy undercurrent. Additionally, it's got an uneasy feeling of the Teen-Anthem-Ballad, but with a darker New Wave/Death Rock/late 70s Brit /Yank sensibility. RIYL: Magazine, Buzzcocks, The Records (UK), Joy Division, 999, et al. No FCCs, as far as I could tell, so what's stoppin' ya from playing it??
"Joyless Masturbation" Crisp, over-laden, multi-tracked harmonies. Also, some extra-crunchy guitar riffs, bass lines that are more like lead guitar notations, and steady, forceful drum backing that's prominent without being dominating in this very clean mix. Not sure just why this evokes such a strong impression of early punk (70s) and a wee taste of Death Rock to me. That's about all I can say, except that I like it! HxJx's "pick-to-click". Ends with a very long fade-out, just the old days of those songs produced to garner commercial success.
"Bag" Frenzied full-on punk ala the kind that is some fiercely powerful from the first chords that it always starts the pit going. "1-2-3-4!!". ya know?? "Grindy" as legendary KFJC DJ and local punk rock radio pioneer Lyle used to say. Ends with fast fade.
