MARY STALLINGS: Don’t Look Back
HighNote, 2012

VOCAL JAZZ – San Francisco native Mary Stallings proves – again – that she’s one of the best jazz singers around. A first-call trio backs her up as she alternates tender ballads and midtempo numbers with a warm voice, impeccable delivery and gorgeous pacing. Right on, Mary.

All great! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11

1. 3:59 – midtempo standard sway, piano has uptown elegance
2. 6:09 – slow romantic ballad: she drags out the syllables in a delicious ache
3. 4:23 – oh yeah… after-hours blues, just voice & piano… perfection!
4. 6:04 – dark ballad medley: slow and gentle with just enough heartache
5. 3:51 – gently waltzing tune: vocals dance over sweet trio
6. 6:06 – torch ballad, careful pacing and some really nice vocal slides
7. 5:02 – Tin-Pan Alley blues: great old-fashioned sound… tell it!
8. 3:17 – slow ballad, beautifully done, short and sweet with no drums
9. 4:34 – Betty Carter ballad, just elastic vocal & rich piano
10. 5:28 – very slow ballad; voice & piano reach into the darkness
11. 4:34 – relaxed, straight-up blues; piano & vocal are very nice indeed
12. 5:55 – slow-drag ballad, hushed and romantic with a bit of loneliness
