Andy S Reviewed 2013-02-09 | ||
60/70's British psychedelic rock in a California lo-fi pop/freak-folk package. Take Guided by Voices, swap out the Who for the Soft Boys, Dayton for San Francisco, beer for weed, and I think you'll have a decent idea what to expect. Second half of the album is generally calmer, cleaner, poppier. RIYL Woods, Robyn Hitchcock, Guided by Voices, Kurt Vile—hell, if you like the Beatles and can tolerate some tape compression, you'll get into this. All fantastic stuff, my picks are pretty arbitrary. FCC 17 —Andy 1 - (2:29) lazy, lilting vox 2 - (2:15) sped-up rock n roll stomp with mini guitar solos 3 - (4:26) grooving folk tune with acoustic guitar and harmonica; jerking start **4 - (3:09) cute and psychey with pitched-up accompanying voice, Peter Pan references *5 - (2:31) real GBV fuzzy delay-swamped rockout 6 - (2:21) stuttering guitar into breezy jangle-pop 7 - (2:55) old-timey porch music ramble feel 8 - (6:49) plodding mid-tempo spacey California folk ballad *9 - (1:37) noisy lo-fi rock n roll, buried vox for most 10 - (2:11) upbeat retro pop with big weird guitar tones on solos 11 - (2:39) slow, friendly indie pop ramble *12 - (2:46) organ intro, slow bouncing folk 13 - (2:43) low-key spacey jangle rock 14 - (1:27) quiet folk mumbling cut through with searing guitar lines 15 - (2:52) cheery psychedelic rock 16 - (2:48) campfire singalong 17 - FCC "shit" (all but inaudible) (1:59) scratchy simple power pop 18 - (2:58) super-simple/repetitive slightly countryish pop 19 - (2:24) slow simple gently noisy indie pop 20 - (2:36) pleasant, upbeat surfy pop 21 - (2:41) sleepy midtempo folk pop, leads into 22 22 - (2:13) gentle Paul McCartney bouncy acoustic singalong, interesting background noise 23 - (1:54) spacey delayed vox in sunny Byrds jangle-pop *24 - (3:26) loopy, noisy monotonous folk with altered vox, reminds me of older Kurt Vile stuff *25 - (2:52) murky layered vocal repetition, plodding pop 26 - (3:10) slow sad and pretty, with droning organ and slide-guitar 27 - (2:29) psychy strummy waltz with quiet vocals, gets rocking toward end 28 - (4:47) Kurt Vile stream-of-consciousness lyrics over steady guitar noodling, exciting speed-up 2/3rds through |
