A 70-voice choir, two bass players (incl. William Parker), a church organ, trumpet, drums, and something called a trumophone combine in a single avant-garde work, performed live.
No FCC issues.
Start with whistling, animal mimicry, heavy breathing & wordless babbling from the choir. Instruments enter (around 2:00) with loose improv. Choir sings in the ether. Trumpet jumps to fore (~6:00) with jazzy melody. Choir does primitive chant. Parker has terrific solo (7:20): very fast & complex. For many minutes, music is quiet & sparse, held together by continuous bass. Short bursts of notes from trumpet & organ. Not much from chorus but the occasional loud shout. Choir comes back big (~16:00) with incoherent babbling. Gets quite loud. Organ piles on with loud, long chords. Chorus suddenly stops (17:50) leaving instruments. Fast & tense. A trumpet solo (~20:00). A slow, peaceful passage contrasts with the recent fast, tense one. Trumpet & female voices do a haunting melody in unison. Drops to almost nothing (~22:30); could stop here if wanted.
New section begins with low, grinding, bowed bass, joined by a few female voices singing long, sustained tones. Extremely slow, dissonant, spacey. Organ joins and adds yet more weirdness. This wraps up providing another opportunity to fade out if desired. (~27:45).
Third section (~28:00) features tribal shouts & percussion. Loud & boisterous. High pitched, fast bowing on bass (~29:00) & trumpet busily buzz around like mosquitoes. Things get stranger than before. Hectic, tense, dissonant. Quiet & spacey (34:00) again. So quiet (~35:00) it’s hard to make out anything. Slowly build something out of nothing again. Long chords from chorus; church music on organ. Sacred sounding, like some great creation myth is being enacted. Bowed bass (~38:00) plays sweetly like a cello. Noises, yelps & warbling from chorus. Trumpet sounds almost classical. Beautiful passage (~40:00 to ~ 41:00) is compelling, strange, primitive. Stravinsky 100 years later. A few pianissimo notes on bass (~42:00) finish it. Lengthy, enthusiastic applause. (43:48)
