BRUNO RÅBERG/ PHIL GRENADIER DUO: Plunge
Orbis Music, 2012

AVANT-GARDE – Organic-sounding free improvisation for bass and trumpet, with lots of effects making it feel like a larger ensemble. Many of these pieces are very short and the groupings indicated on the back make sense either as miniature suites, or as standalone tracks.

Fo’s Picks: 8, 9, 13, 15, 18

3–7. 6:02 – 5-part mini-suite: various moods of bass/trumpet improv interplay
8. 6:27 – haunted, downright creepy cover of Ornette Coleman tune
9. 5:44 – percussive bass (drumming on body), trumpet chatter, duo wanders
13. 3:51 – melodic fragments, slips into an off-center rhythmic cycle
15. 3:02 – very open duo improv with echo effects coming in midway thru
16. 3:13 – slow trudge through a bare-bones melody
17. 3:18 – very slow, very spacious echoing abstraction, has an eerie shimmer
18. 3:05 – slow, moody, with multi-tracked trumpet and bass
