PIERO ODORICI: Cedar Walton Presents…
Savant, 2012

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Solid tenor saxophonist from Bologna, Italy, playing in front of piano great Cedar Walton and his trio. This music comes straight down the line but it’s played with great command and flair, hitting the right buttons at all the right moments.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6, maybe 8

1. 6:55 – lush trio intro; stirring postbop melody with a slight African touch
2. 3:19 – relaxed balladry: sax & piano mesh very well
3. 6:16 – uptempo drums kick off a breezy standard; solos are a bit tricky
4. 8:21 – really nice version of a latin-bop classic, sax is rich and expressive
5. 7:52 – fine ballad, straightforward and completely syrup-free
6. 6:13 – happy, breezy bustle with a light Latin touch, drummer gets some
7. 5:29 – easy stroll, gets swinging, solos for all
8. 6:48 – standard, easy and breezy: piano trips lightly, sax dances
