Supreme Cuts and their “Whispers in the Dark” off their label Dovecote Records give us a pretty damn good ambient album. The main difference that can be seen between this duo hailing from Chicago is the quality. They use all the common elements of a song of their genre, deep bass lines, synth melodies, combined with world sounds like clapping and water dropping. The only vocals are heavily modified, cut, and distorted. Highly recommend that you listen to with loud bass. Warm at some points, intense at others, all dreamlike and atmospheric.|
1.(1:20) Whispers part 1: Short build up intro song using synth
2.(6:15) Lessons of Darkness (Apology): Deep and enveloping electronic sounds with sprinkles of drumming and almost jungle sounds.
3.(5:59) (Youngster got off that) Sherm: A deep bass line at its core, other elements like clapping and dumming and well placed melodies add up to a good ambient song.
*4.(4:21) E2: Opens in its familiar style, but quick changes in tempo make for an intense song.
5.(4:19) Ciroc Waterfalls: Minimalistic music for the first half, with nothing but deep bass and sparse water drops or a clap here and there. Definitely an atmospheric song.
6.(0:41) Intermission: Heavily modified old jazz vocals.
7.(1:24) Whispers part 2: Somber tune, slow tempo.
*8.(5:25) Belly: A constant build up that takes the listener for a ride into the world of drum and bass. A hazy hypnotic song.
9.(3:20)Epitome: Starts off sounding like something out of the Tron soundtrack, continues mostly in the same fashion, with a simple melodies added tastefully. A more chill song, less of the tension build up dynamic than other songs.
*10.(3:57) 18th: A gliding dream trip throughout Supreme Cuts-land. Interspersed are little nuggets of triumphant crashes.
11.(3:25) Val Venus: Less bass and more focused on the synth melodies and the heavily cut up vocals as well as the sound of electronically produced drum sounds.
12.(8:21) Whispers in the dark: Slow tempo for most of the song, seemingly taking different elements from all of the other songs on the album and combining it into this title song.
