Georgia-Anne Muldrow – Seeds – E-one
Each year it seems a new neo-soul diva / hippie-chick is trotted out, either on the pop side or underground. Muldrow, a cut above, is part of the Madlib stable, and her myriad influences are a grab bag of psychedelics, Motown, Nina Simone and Aretha. She also reportedly plays a lot of instruments on her recordings. The most striking element of ‘Seeds’ is the production choices – squashed EQ, very tight and AM radio-sounding at times, everything here could have been very in your face, but instead it’s delightfully subtle (see “Wind”). The only complaint might be a lack of memorable, hum-worthy tunes, but the aura of this fine singer more than compensates. Note: Track 2 segues very abruptly into Track 3. No FCCs. – J. Rosenthal
