HARRIS EISENSTADT: Canada Day Octet
482 Music, 2012

AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – This expanded, five-horn version of drummer Harris Eisenstadt’s Canada Day (normally a quintet) maintains the group’s playful spirit but also really enhances the lopsided nature of their tunes: they shuffle and slump, often melting into a soft ooze, but then the vibes will point the band in a more upbeat direction and everything suddenly stretches out or strikes like a snake.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5

1. 14:21 – drum-banging intro met by weary horns; lumpy trombone solo in a heavy, slow-churn groove; spiky sax solo; paranoid improv at end
2. 9:00 – almost catchy, with prodding horns, tense solos and snappy drums
3. 9:27 – harsh buzzing into relaxed, abnormal melody; tense solos, quiet end
4. 7:52 – feels a bit like a reggae or Ethiopian jazz; riding on a vibraphone riff
5. 5:51 – lyrical but glum, with some nice horn harmony and a dreamy air
