JOHN ABERCROMBIE: Within a Song
ECM, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Guitar great Abercrombie leads a top quartet with Joe Lovano on tenor sax, Drew Gress on bass and Joey Baron on drums, taking on tunes from various albums that influenced him back in the 1960s, plus a few new ones. Abercrombie’s haunting sound fits the bass and drums beautifully, and Lovano, who’s in his most lyrical mode here, simply sounds amazing alongside them. A marvelous set.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 8

1. 5:55 – laid-back ballad, hushed quartet sound, very nice
2. 6:38 – beautiful original tune, calm and reserved with a light waltzing touch
3. 7:56 – airy, frictionless drive: an inverted standard glides forward easily
4. 6:34 – lovely, quiet version of Miles Davis/Bill Evans tone poem, fine sax
5. 5:58 – upbeat original with elusive melody: floats and drifts calmly
6. 6:12 – light Ornette Coleman blues: inscrutable guitar, thoughtful sax
7. 9:12 – serenely beautiful, meditative Coltrane: long intro, floating guitar
8. 6:26 – Bill Evans abstracted blues: lightly busting intro, settles in
9. 6:25 – gentle, floating tune: lighter-than-air sax & guitar solos
