ORRIN EVANS: Flip the Script
Posi-Tone, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Evans leads a solid piano trio with an adventurous streak, romping and stomping through dusky modern-bop tunes and throwing in a few unexpected classics. This recording has a live, urgent sound that commands attention, and chunky, compelling performances.

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 9

1. 4:28 – clomping stroll slips into scattered improv, speedy bop, tricky end
2. 4:49 – strong rolling groove: piano really digs in, and the rhythm is great
3. 3:14 – uptempo cooker: great drive, gets stuck in a little riffing loop
4. 3:37 – deep, suspended ballad: aching piano over shadowy bass/drums
5. 5:33 – a ponderous, angular twist on the blues: bass gets a playful solo
6. 2:58 – bright, bustling modern-jazz revision of a 1970s hit (from “The Wiz”!)
7. 5:49 – jumps between a real nice walking swing, low stroll, brisk bop
8. 6:09 – standard ballad, lush and serene with some gorgeous piano
9. 4:11 – hard-driving rhythm softened by a really sweet, happy melody
10. 4:31 – solo piano: slow, brooding take on disco hit (the “Soul Train” theme)
