MAX NAGL ENSEMBLE: Live at Porgy & Bess Vienna
Rude Noises, 2012
AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – Nagl, a saxophonist based in Vienna, Austria, here leads a very unusual nonet (2 reeds, 2 violins, trombone, keys, bass, drums, theremin!) in a freewheeling live set that is just a bit to the left of “normal” jazz, full of good-natured humor and surprise twists, but also some moments of gentle beauty. And I love that the theremin is used as a lead instrument and not just as a wacky effect.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9
1. 4:21 – brisk, bouncy fun: theremin is like a wordless vocal, good sax solo
2. 4:21 – spiky little bounce, becomes a slow-dance in the middle
3. 5:06 – sneaky start, then raucous & snappy jazz groove, becomes a dirge
4. 5:31 – calm, gentle sway: sweet theremin & violin get leading roles
5. 9:46 – ominous free-fusion builds, sinks into chugging groove, lightens up
6. 7:43 – very gentle orchestral sound: a slightly spooky cinematic ballad
7. 6:19 – all over the place: slow intro, good-time beat, free slouch, brisk bop
8. 3:07 – strings set up lightly suspenseful pulse; lots of theremin & keyboard
9. 4:14 – slow optimism, like the ending theme from a film, really nice
10. 0:19 – spoken intro
11. 1:16 – quick, dynamic stomp and applause
