CHRISTIAN SCOTT: Christian aTunde Adjuah
Concord Jazz, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Wow. Scott, a powerful young trumpeter out of New Orleans, continues a bold trajectory into new territory with this hard-hitting set of rock-inflected grooves, social/political themes, and the fusion of tradition and futurism. His trumpet soars majestically over electric guitar and sinister pulsing rhythms, creating a sound that’s dead serious, full of deep thoughts but also carrying a sense of hope. Play it.

Fo’s Picks: Disc I – 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 Disc II – 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12

DISC ONE

1. 5:41 – bold fanfare, then stark; trumpet screams over dark agitation
2. 5:01 – strong trumpet over steady bounce, a glum yet resolute groove
3. 2:25 – spiraling piano/rhythm interlude, sudden stop, bleeped studio banter
4. 5:42 – a unique sound: tender melody, brisk buzzy rhythm, muted trumpet
5. 5:17 – stirring fanfare into a contemplative rockish groove, insistent drums
6. 4:45 – skidding rhythm, but trumpet is steady and stern
7. 6:01 – moody groove: flowing guitar & piano solos, bustling rhythms
8. 6:15 – calm ballad, minimal rhythm, muted trumpet; gets deep & beautiful
9. 4:15 – cool guitar spiral, trumpet weaves gently through, tight horn loop
10. 4:30 – slurred horns move slowly over stormy drums
11. 10:39 – calmly reflective, heavy but rising theme, trumpet reaches for sky

DISC TWO

1. 3:51 – steady rockish march, heavy but with a feeling of optimism
2. 5:56 – rolling rhythm: angular, slicing trumpet/guitar lines & brooding solos
3. 1:35 – hip-hop harpsichord interlude. Yes, really… More, please!
4. 5:41 – relaxed melodic ballad vs. quick rolling rhythm; a nice combination
5. 4:03 – slow, very soulful ballad; spare, with overlapping trumpet/sax lines
6. 5:34 – midtempo stroll with a jazzy African touch, trumpet/piano interplay
7. 7:02 – gently spinning melody, just a wonderful sound, relaxed solos
8. 6:24 – firm, steady beat: serious melody slides into solid groove for solos
9. 2:26 – interlude: serious piano into flowing stream over rocky rhythm
10. 7:03 – relaxed, soulful, contemplative trombone and guitar solos
11. 3:37 – very cool rolling rhythm under flexible trumpet line
12. 5:31 – very sweet romantic ballad, just trumpet & piano… lovely
