BRUCE BARTH: Three Things of Beauty Savant, 2012 MODERN BOP – Solid quartet work from Barth, a lyrical pianist with an unerring sense of tasteful swing. He meshes very nicely indeed with Steve Nelson’s ringing vibraphone, and the rhythm tandem of bassist Ben Street & drummer Dana Hall add some nice propulsion. This is mainstream jazz done right; a very pleasing listen. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 1. 7:25 – dusky, swinging take on a Gershwin tune, nice harmonic touches 2. 5:28 – a bright, lively swinger: piano & vibes solos sing, happy drum break 3. 8:42 – straight-up blues: solo intro, then laid-back & mellow… so nice! 4. 6:12 – bustling big-city rhythm but relaxed melody; swift vibes solo 5. 8:18 – thoughtful evening music: lush, gently flowing, a really nice sound 6. 7:10 – gently bluesy Eri Yamamoto tune: a hushed feel, lovely piano & bass 7. 6:11 – light & easy Coltrane ditty; vibes out front first, then piano, bass solo 8. 5:42 – relaxed sway, lots of cohesion in the quartet, smooth-flowing solos 9. 3:29 – upbeat blues walk, perky rhythm, vibes swing nicely 10. 3:33 – nice piano/vibes duet: a cheerful feeling [ Fo ] - 25 August 2012 | ||
