Bailter Space – Strobosphere – Fire Records
New Zealand's Bailter Space return with their first new album in 8 years. They peaked in the early 90's with a string of albums on Flying Nun/Matador, all featuring sheets of noise, incomprehensible vocals and dark, descending chords. That formula is back, best exemplified by the powerful opener, "Things That We Found," but the old magic is in short supply. Elsewhere there's a palpable trend toward more conventional "rock" sounds, like a limp Jesus & Mary Chain, and it becomes tiresome and samey pretty quick.
