Chopin, Frederic / Piano Concerto No. 2, Sonata No. 2, et al. (K. Buniatishvili, piano)

Chopin (1810-1849) is the Romantic period’s best-loved composer of works for the piano. He captured love, nobility, wonder, mystery, pathos, even anguish, but always with beauty. The Waltz in C# minor lyrically expresses melancholy and the eroticism of the ballroom. The Sonata No. 2 contains the world’s best-known funeral march (played at Chopin’s funeral and the state funeral of Pres. Kennedy), within which the joys of the deceased’s life are briefly heard. Schumann said this sonata was “overflowing with tenderness, boldness, love and contempt.” The Ballade No. 4 is regarded as a masterpiece of composition, exalted, intense, sublimely powerful. The turbulent coda leaves one breathless. The Piano Concerto No. 2, composed in Poland before Chopin left for Paris, was actually his first, but published second. The 1st mvmt incorporates brilliant style with melancholy melody. The 2nd mvmt, in bel canto operatic style, with delicate melodic embroidery, is a love song to a young Polish woman who captured his heart. The dramatic 3rd mvmt incorporates the drama of the noble Polish mazurka.

1. Waltz in C# Minor, Op. 64/I - Tempo Giusto (3:20)
2. Sonata Nr. 2 Bb-Minor, Op. 35 - I. Grave - Doppio Movimento (6:04). Stormy opening, lyrical second theme.
3. Sonata Nr. 2 Bb-Minor, Op. 35 - II. Scherzo (6:48). Virtuoso writing with relaxed melodic central section.
4. Sonata Nr. 2 Bb-Minor, Op. 35 - III. Marche Funèbre. Lento (8:28)
5. Sonata Nr. 2 Bb-Minor, Op. 35 - IV. Finale. Presto (1:22). Winds blow over the graveyard as the deceased’s soul vainly tries to sing one last time.
6. Ballade Nr. 4 F-Minor, Op. 52 - Andante Con Moto (10:29)
7. Piano Concerto Nr. 2 F-Minor, Op. 21 - I. Maestoso (13:10). Ardor and coquetry alternately enchant.
8. Piano Concerto Nr. 2 F-Minor, Op. 21 - II. Larghetto (8:54). Loveliness and soulful longing.
9. Piano Concerto Nr. 2 F-Minor, Op. 21 - III. Allegro Vivace (7:37). A dramatic adventure in 3/4 time.
10. Mazurka A-Minor, Op. 17/Iv - Lento Ma Non Troppo (4:47). Chromatic melody and minor harmony create great but gentle sadness.
