BRAD MEHLDAU: Where Do You Start

MODERN JAZZ – Recorded at the same sessions as Ode, released earlier this year, this disc finds top pianist Mehldau and his outstanding trio reinterpreting rock, classic jazz and Brazilian tunes, several of them ballads. All have the Mehldau stamp, with delicate emotional shading from the piano and tight interplay. Really good, understated stuff.

1. 5:25 – Alice in Chains song: gently rolling circular rhythm, piano trips lightly
2. 8:47 – Sufjan Stevens tune: soft & delicate; beautiful piano, rises in middle
3. 8:13 – lightly twisted bebop: self-counterpoint from piano, steady rhythm
4. 10:08 – Elvis Costello ballad: very slow, intimate, lush solo piano in 2nd half
5. 6:24 – sneaky bop classic: weightless propulsion, bass solo & quick drums
6. 6:24 – dark tune made famous by Jimi Hendrix: a trudging, bluesy march
7. 9:02 – very nice Brazilian ballad with a quiet dignity, very subtle piano work
8. 5:26 – flows from 7: meandering improv/jam with a nice rock-inspired beat
9. 8:31 – Nick Drake ballad has a gentle flow, long bass solo & bright piano
10. 6:01 – upbeat Brazilian jazz: fast drums elevate optimistic piano melody
11. 4:06 – very warm and quiet version of an emotional ballad
