THE SHUFFLE DEMONS: Cluster Funk
Linus, 2012

WACKY FUNK-JAZZ – Reunited after a 17-year break, this goofball sax-heavy quintet out of Canada still has the tight grooves, well-honed jazz chops and nice-guy lyrics that made them so great the first time around (see“Greatest Hits” in the KZSU library). All FCC clean.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

1. 4:00 – upbeat funk jam, tough horns: lyrics about consumerism
2. 4:44 – slinky sound with perky chorus, very positive lyrics (be nice)
3. 3:55 – instrumental: upbeat boppin’ with careening theme, busy sax solos
4. 3:12 – very goofy, marching ode to the drummer… but no drum solo. :)
5. 4:52 – nice, relaxed, slippery sound: sly vocals and good sax/drum break
6. 5:42 – instrumental: upbeat, catchy, semi-tribal groove, goes briefly out
7. 5:43 – ewww… arachnids! low and funky with silly lyrics and good horns
8. 3:50 – upbeat thumping groove, about factory workers in China
9. 4:17 – serious instrumental jazz: circular rhythm, horns become chaotic
10. 4:05 – instrumental: reggae beat and solid horn work make a happy break
11. 4:18 – laid-back funky thump: lyrics about a homeless scavenger
12. 5:38 – relaxed instrumental: lots of bass and some cool sax harmony
