SCOTT ROBINSON DOCTETTE: Bronze Nemesis Doc-Tone, 2012 AVANT/MODERN JAZZ – Saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson pays tribute to Doc Savage, a pulp-magazine hero who was one of the most popular characters of the 1930s and is considered a precursor to Superman. Each of the tunes draws inspiration from a particular Doc novel (there were nearly 200 of them). Most feature a weird & wonderful mélange of exotic instrumentation – Theremin! Euphonium! Contrabass saxophone! – sudden, episodic shifts in mood or texture, and an atmosphere of vintage sci-fi mystery. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12 1. 4:01 – slow, with bass-heavy overtures and weird electronic trills 2. 4:25 – sneaky spy-music start w/harpsichord, then sultry dance w/theremin 3. 1:40 – deep, ominous bass sax, a rising suspenseful pulse 4. 8:29 – dark but bluesy, with an easy-swinging groove, piano & sax solos 5. 6:59 – slithery, moaning improv with theremin & slide saxophone 6. 10:51 – lots of metallic percussion mixed in with a strolling jazz groove 7. 1:31 – a complex, thoughful solo by the late bassist Dennis Irwin 8. 4:36 – spooky, melancholy tune: flute leads a very moody quartet 9. 1:09 – searing, wild improv: squealing sax & trumpet 10. 6:01 – low drum & huge contrabass sax: rumble, moan, wild drum solo 11. 5:26 – relaxed, ballad-like tune with an air of casual mystery 12. 7:33 – complicated tune goes all over the place, some wide-open solos [ Fo ] - 10 November 2012 |
