CLASSIC NIGHTCLUB JAZZ w VOCALS. LaVerne Butler caresses every note of these standards, love songs and show tunes with her rich, confident alto, and interprets every syllable with nuance & style. Bruce Barth is arranger, piano accompanist. Subdued bass and drums provide a steady foundation. Houston Person plays tenor sax on four tracks.
No FCC issues.
* Slow. Vocal is slinky, a bit vampy; sax responds soulfully; rhythm is minimal. (6:38)
** Mid-fast. Peppy & fun. Delightfully old-fashioned lyric. The sort of song Ella would have done (but no scat singing here). Piano shows off with a terrific bridge. (3:55)
** Fast. Very bright, almost brassy vocal (like a trumpet). Driven along forcefully by piano & drums. Really good bass solo in the middle. (4:04)
Slow. Bluesy. Voice & sax trade leads atop shimmering, brushed ride cymbals. (5:27)
Mid-tempo. Bluesy, broken hearted lyric. 40s-ish backing vocals. (3:51)
* Mid-slow. Love’s been lost again, but with a hop in her step she’s making the best of this time. Sax is again very soulful. (4:44)
* Mid-fast. Upbeat singing; elegant pno, bass, drums rhythm section. Hot bass solo. (4:06)
Very slow romantic ballad. Lovely singing, but this song is sorta sleepy. (6:08)
Mid-tempo. Uninspired reading of a show tune. Listen to Julie Andrews’ version. (4:34)
** Her voice like a sax, Person’s sax like a human voice, the two of them seduce each other. Like a sexy, hanging-on-each-other, slow dance just before closing time. (5:35)
Mid-tempo. Like #9, a show tune that’s flat, mechanical, uninteresting. (3:07)
