Contemporary protest/activist music, timely in light of the latest Israeli atrocities/onslaught as several tracks focus on Israeli aggression, Palestinian rights, US involvement. Music is mostly terrible, cheesy, full-band with harmonies, organ, white boy funk, etc. Better songs stick to a mostly acoustic, minimal format (they are excellent). But the lyrics are what its all about. Rovics is a regular in the Middle East activism scene, justice, human rights, KPFA, Democracy Now etc. Great stuff, a voice that needs to be heard, the side of the argument that is usually completely repressed and censored. Hello? Is thing on?..
1) (3:41) cheesy upbeat urgent music, excellent commentary on the Swedish guy who shot up the camp, xenophobia and the history of religious racism through Europe, Knights Templar, the Crusades
2) (4:03) intifada, attempts to help starving people branded as “aiding Hamas” shut down by the US Government and sent to prison
3) (3:19) upbeat, Isreali hypocrisy, double-speak a la Netanyahu
4) (3:37) rich/vs poor, the London riots
5) (4:52) mostly acoustic, love song
6) (4:36) a song about being a Macktivist, pretty painful
7) (4:04) title track, about cops infiltrating protests, US “collateral damage”, asking “who is the terrorist?”
8) (3:15) A Portland song! Plays on utopian clichés on the city, but warns about the cops who he slams: “you can join the police force instead of the KKK”, mostly acoustic, palatable music
9) (3:28) playful acoustic feel, about the ridiculous right wing claims that Obama is a socialist: “if only it were true”
10) (3:01) FCC: “lady gaga’s tits”. Swingy bar-blues music, about the record industry dominance, sharks/criminals, anti-file sharing, how it leads to censorship
11) (5:06) folky acoustic ballad, personal story about WWII vet, pacifism, the Vietnam war draft, incredibly sad
12) (3:44) about why only crappy music gets played on the radio
