BEATLES TRIBUTE. Eclectic collection of Beatles tunes by various Minnesota-based acts: some notable (eg, Trampled by Turtles), some oddball (high school marching band). No FCC issues. 1 * “A Day in the Life” mid-tempo. Male lead singer is faithful to John’s original. “I read the news” verses have acoustic piano & strings. “Woke up, got outta bed” bridge gets more electric & fun. Adds a soulful saxophone. (4:55) 2 ** “Mean Mr Mustard” mid-fast. Female lead vocal. Classic-rock lineup: electric guitar, bass, drums. Highlight is a good lead guitar. (2:36) 3 “Girl” slow, sad ballad. Male vocal. Guitar & keyboard. A bit of strings. (3:17) 4 “For No One” mid-slow. Folk-rock guitar, banjo, bass. Hoarse female vox. (2:26) 5 ** “Baby’s in Black” mid-tempo. Alt-trad country string band: guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle & bass. Two male voices in harmony with that “high lonesome sound.” (2:14) 6 “For the Benefit of Mr Kite” mid-tempo. True to original; turns up the dial on that circus organ thing. Lots of voice parts: singing, speaking, sounds. (4:19) 7 “Misery” mid-fast. Soft-rock treatment of fairly obscure tune. Pleasant male voice backed by soft organ and drums. (1:56) 8 * “Think for Yourself” mid-tempo. Sheryl Crow-like singer on a sad George Harrison song. Backup is wha-wha elec guitar, good keyboards. Old-school sound. (3:23) 9 * “You Never Give Me Your Money” mid-tempo. Good, faithful interpretation. Three male singers in harmony plus backing singers. Electric guitar, keyboard, drums. (4:22) 10 * “Back in USSR” fast. Hoarse vox, guitar, bass, drums. Punk style. Noisy, lo-fi. (2:40) 11 ** “Cry Baby Cry” mid-slow. Strong, bluesy female vocal with female backing singers. Guitar, organ, drums. (3:06) 12 “Baby You’re a Rich Man” mid-tempo. Emotional Rob Thomas-like vocal. Instruments are guitar, organ, bass & drums. (3:53) 13 “She Loves You” fast. High school marching band: lots of brass, winds, drums. (1:45) |
