Dawn McCarthy & Bonnie “Prince” Billy “What the Brothers Sang” Label: Palace Recordings Joseph Reviewed 6/5/13 Inspired by the songs performed by the Everly Brothers in the 60s & 70s, these are delicately-paced & nuanced vocal duets, generally slow-paced. No FCCs detected *= favorite cuts 1 – (3:02) Breakdown. Cover of Kristofferson song. Nice vocals, slow tempo. 2 – (2:44) Empty Boxes* Soft duet harmony, sweet mandolin in the background. 3 – (2:42) Milk Train Upbeat, nice harmonies, good rendition of Tony Romeo song. 4 – (3:35) What Am I Living For* Hauntingly beautiful love ballad. Nice fiddle break. 5 – (2:15) My Little Yellow Bird Different style than the rest of the album’s sound. 6 – (2:17) Devoted To You* Slow duet featuring the vocals, musical backing is soft. 7 – (2:27) Somebody Help Me* Up-tempo rock-flavored song, soaring vocals & guitar. 8 – (3:12) So Sad Don Everly song, slow & sad, like the title says. 9 – (3:58) Omaha Deliberate entry to this song, picks up tempo mid-way, just OK. 10 – (3:00) It’s All Over Another sad, love-gone-wrong song. Slow. 11 – (3:51) Poems, Prayers & Promises So-so cover of the John Denver song. 12 – (2:53) Just What I Was Looking For OK rendition of Carole King song. Sappy. 13 – (2:28) Kentucky* Slow, measured cover of classic song. Droning organ, spare guitar. |
