TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON: Money Jungle – Provocative in Blue

MODERN JAZZ – Unusual re-interpretation of a classic 1963 Duke Ellington album. The original Money Jungle was an all-star trio effort notable for a weird, uneasy tension. Carrington, a drummer, also uses a trio with Gerald Clayton on piano and Christian McBride on bass, but she mixes in more soul, a variety of guest musicians, and a few audio clips from economic or political speeches on track 1.

2. 5:57 – soulful ballad with cool scatting & trumpet by Clark Terry, soft winds
3. 6:01 – country-blues intro, slinky r&b groove with wordless Lizz Wright vocal
4. 4:11 – straight trio swing, very true to the original concept, strong solos
5. 6:17 – playful, a Stevie Wonder-ish feel, rolling solos, spaced-out ending
