Matmos- The Marriage of True Minds
Label: Thrill Jockey Records

Okay, so this is kind of strange (seventh album, fyi). Basically, Dr. Drew Daniel an M.C. Schmidt decided to create an album based on Ganzfeld Experiment. He attempted to transit the “concept of the new album” from his mind into the minds of the targeted percipients. Then, participants described out loud anything (musical phrases, ideas, sounds, etc). These materials were used as scores, instructions, source material, blueprints, or restrictions to guide the creation of the songs. <- From the liner notes. Good job, you’ve picked up a winner. Read the description over the air from the notes after you chose your song.

Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8
FCC: None
*1.( 7:02)- A medley of moody, slower, sounds all mashed together but with a piano/ cello driven beat. Female spoken word about telepathy. Morphs into “amplified rubber band” with stones and triangle. DEAR LORD!
(4:43) Very dramatic sounding erratic kind of stuff. All over the place and kind of bubbly. Gets dancey?!
*3. (3:39) Aggressive tribal beats with water sounds. Mmm dat crazy saxophone/ police gets in the mix too!
(2:37) Radio tuning skipping through channels. Aliens emerge from the white noise. Chill.
*5. (4:47) Laid trip hop back beat with really sweet synths. Summery and psychedelic.
**6. (5:40) Awesome vocal synthesis merging with psy-trance beats! Rockin Guitar thrown in for good measure along with tambourine for the flower children. SO DAMN DARK AND GOOD. Should be in a Lynch film.
7. (6:11) Women/ men describing this triangle. Layers of noise. Creepy, but this one comes off a bit forced and overdone.
*8. (7:14) Kick drum driven with playful synth diddy in the beginning. Drifting vocals and other cool noises. Attitude alongside thump.
9. (8:03) Growling voice, a little more intense and aggressive. Gets kind of loopy/ trippy.
