Album Review
Reviewed 2013-04-29
Artist: Major Lazer
Album: Free the Universe

All sorts of different songs, mainly dancehall, electro, and moombahtone. This is Major Lazer's first release since splitting in 2012 (Diplo + Switch--> Diplo). A lot of the tracks capture the earlier dancehall style, but this album also melds many different sounds that Diplo has been curating under his Mad Decent label. Tons of collaborations with various artists in all genres, peep the tracklisting to find your fave. If you like older Dillon Francis or Munchi… play.
Picks: 3, 5, 8 [FCC :-(]
FCC's: 8, 12

1. (4:04) Hard dance music with repetitive beats, snares, and foreign languages. Breathy female vocalist, but Santigold(!) helps. Crackles.
2. (3:19) Dancehall, moombahtone, male "rapping", female sass. Aggressive.
*3. (4:50) Slower song, cool beats, synths, tambourines, and the vocals shine/ pierce. Works well
4. (4:13) Light reggae mixed with Flux's hard core dubstep/brostep. Dirty and grimy.
*5. (4:28) Feel da riddim. Classic Major Lazer style (dancehall + electro)
6. (3:01) Creepy and upbeat popper song! Gets kind of hard, fuck yea Peaches.
7. (4:14) Crooning male vocals with simple beats. Spacey sounds and distortions.
**8. FCC (4:29) Moar cowbell. Horns, moombahtone, male vox. Sweaty, sexy song.
9. (4:22) Electro. Meh. Wynter Gordon is a redeeming factor of this song.
10 (4:29) LAIDBACK LUKE! MS DYNAMITE! Aggressive big room electro. "You sweat, the real radio" Momentary pause @ 2:00
11. (4:29) Cheesy. Vocals, beats, synths. Ugh.
12. FCC (4:07) The stuff for frat parties. Repetitive electro with "rapping"
13. (3:48) Big room electro. More of the same.
14. (3:57) Slower, reggae-influenced. Vocals regarding the struggle
