GLOD / PIKET / TOKAR / KUGEL: Op Der Schmelz Live Nemu, 2013 AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – Excellent live set from an adventurous but tightly knit international group (Luxembourg/USA/Ukraine/Germany). The blending of composition and improvisation, chamber music and jazz is seamless and natural, continually shifting, full of surprises but completely accessible and highly compelling. Roby Glod : alto & soprano saxophones Roberta Piket : piano Mark Tokar : bass Klaus Kugel : drums Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6 1. 13:07 – open, flowing solo piano intro; rapid sax spins over turbulent rhythm; everybody solos, stretching or compressing time 2. 7:35 – soprano sax & piano in a slow, angular dance; hall-of-mirrors quartet, contemplative bass solo at the end 3. 14:25 – drums rise from silence & propel fluttering sax; fantastic duet moves into trio jazz improv that pulls three ways, wild bass solo at end 4. 6:13 – ballad/tone poem: reflective alto sax & bass, deep quartet rumble, sad piano and longing bass solos over very quiet drums 5. 18:01 – slow creaking & spider-like scurrying; drifts into lively semi-melodic improv, then fast sax; piano drives straight course, thumping drums 6. 5:55 – uptempo with heavy drums, trio to start then adds hopping sax, lengthy applause & band intros at end [ Fo ] - 5 May 2013 | ||
