JOHN SANTOS SEXTET: Filosofía Caribeña, Vol. 2 Machete, 2013 LATIN JAZZ – This is the concluding part of a massive 4-year project from Bay Area percussionist/educator John Santos. As in Vol. 1, the tunes are all tributes to the musicians, family, and political figures who inspire Santos. There are rich layers of traditional Puerto Rican/Afro-Cuban percussion, many guest musicians, a wide range of rhythmic styles, passionate call & response vocals in several languages, and very fine performances from all involved. It’s a winner. All tracks clean. Try any track! Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 1. 7:25 – lovely rolling groove, strong vocal, mellow sax-led interlude in middle 2. 5:47 – rapid-fire rap centers cool tribute to Puerto Rico; great bass/trumpet 3. 10:24 – relaxed intro, then merengue gradually heats up, Spanish vox 4. 6:43 – relaxed, “crooked” cha-cha rhythm, flute/sax solos, speeds up later 5. 8:26 – a warm, folksy mélange of Haitian creole and pan-Caribbean flavors 6. 9:38 – deep Afro-Cuban: walking rhythm to swift rumba to mellow trumpet 7. 5:34 – upbeat, friendly feel: lightly bouncing rhythm, accordion, warm vocals 8. 7:26 – fantastic sound: rainforest/bird call, lovely melody, welcoming rhythm 9. 6:21 – orisha praise song: lively call & response, then great flute & rumba 10. 4:55 – the most “modern” piece: stands tall with strong vox & trombone [ Fo ] - 12 May 2013 |
