MICHAEL DEASE: Coming Home
D Clef, 2013

STRAIGHT-AHEAD JAZZ – This in-demand trombonist’s second outing as a leader features an A-list band and a very nice selection of modern-bop compositions, all played with joyous verve. Dease is a wonderfully agile player, ripping off hyperspeed bebop runs or wrapping up sweet, eloquent ballad lines with equal poise. Great work.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11

1. 6:59 – urban bop pulse with scribbly theme, nice groove, soulful solos
2. 5:47 – relaxed, airy and optimistic: excellent bass, flowing horns & piano
3. 7:46 – elegant bop: classy, then brisk with excellent quartet arrangement
4. 4:56 – classic Ellington ballad, sweet and very soulful: sextet sounds larger
5. 7:01 – vigorous, modern sound in 5… strong saxes & rhythm, muted ‘bone
6. 7:43 – thoughtfully optimistic tune: solos skip along, very fine piano
7. 6:42 – strolling, catchy tune: horns & piano settle into a friendly groove
8. 3:41 – standard played fast; this tune is short but packed with solos/duos
9. 6:30 – happy, easygoing bop stroll dedicated to sax legend Jimmy Heath
10. 5:42 – relaxed, flowing groove with a semi-Latin feel, very warm
11. 6:18 – overheated & muscular: a high-speed virtuoso romp, great drums
