ROB MAZUREK OCTET: Skull Sessions
Cuneiform, 2013

PSYCHEDELIC AVANT-JAZZ – Whoa... huge, hypnotic noises result when prolific cornetist/composer Rob Mazurek mashes up his Exploding Star large ensemble sound with the Brazilian-flavored rhythms and electronics of his São Paulo Underground project. These are long, sprawling tracks but don’t let that put you off; just fall into the bottomless rhythmic ocean and enjoy as bizarre creatures swim by.

Note: track 1 fades (quietly & gently) into #2.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4

1. 17:20 – electronic tones drift into dissonance; a heavy rhythmic jazz groove emerges; vibes shimmer, flute flutters, cornet stabs in a drum soup
2. 15:00 – sparkling, bubbly, beautiful: a sort of African march springs up; wild flute; bold cornet as the rhythm rolls forward like a nightmare
3. 15:58 – starts with confused clatter; rising improv noise, then very gentle vibraphone/cornet duo; drums drag it into darkness & madness
4. 13:02 – solo vibes intro; quick-rolling drum groove, turns celebratory; folksy rabeca fiddle/piccolo; falls into spiky-jazz, then guitar-led noise
5. 04:23 – creaky atmosphere with flute, burbling electronics, string sounds
