EXPERIMENTAL FOLK ROCK / FOLKTRONIC

The fifth studio release (over 10 years) from this British group is a concept album, with stories set in a village full of odd characters. The sound is partly pastoral, partly sci-fi, with lots of surprising instrumentation and electronics. Male & female duet singing may remind you a bit of Monsters and Men.

No FCC issues.

1 Mid-tempo. Gentle arpeggios. M/F singers in unison. A bit of background drone. (4:39)
2 ** Mid-slow. Pleasant, fun sound. Catchy rhythm. Hazy vocal. Very cool synth. (3:54)
3 * Mid-tempo. Hazy, dreamy vocals. Quite folkie. Guitar to start, then synth. (4:37)
4 Mid-tempo. Tricky rhythm; bit of Calypso swing. Full of interesting effects. (4:33)
5 * Mid-tempo. Fast finger-style guitars. Nice singing. (4:07)
6 Mid-fast. Syncopated. Music-box (or Jack in the box) playfulness. (3:54)
7 Mid-tempo. Multi-layered, dense instrumentation. Just a bit too much. (4:53)
8 ** Mid-fast. Multi-layered again, and nicer this time. Lovely harmony singing. (3:39)
9 Very slow. Mysterious. Japanese motifs. Less than satisfying vocals. (4:49)
