HUMOROUS ALTERNATIVE FOLKIE SINGER-SONGWRITER Beans on Toast, besides being a simple British meal, is folk singer Bobby Groves playing guitar, banjo & harmonica. His voice is gravely with a strong British accent. Other instruments are piano, accordion, trumpet, bass & drums. Lyrics are smart, ironic, funny. Lots of FCC issues. 1 **Mid-tempo. Simple, sweet love song about simple things in life. Voice & guitar. (2:46) 2 * Upbeat, affectionate look at working-class England, warts & all. (3:05) 3 * (FCC: “fuck” “shit”) Acerbic comment on Iraq war & economic trouble at home. (2:09) 4 (FCC: “fucking”) Mid fast. Folk song about all sorts of drugs. Guitar & banjo. (3:23) 5 ** (FCC: “fucking”) Fast, lively. Critical look at our tech-dominated life. (2:18) 6 *** Mid-tempo. Getting by & keeping it real in tough times. Delightful & uplifting. (3:33) 7 *** Slow. Opens with Dylan-esque harmonica. Very much a folk song: voices & guitar. Nice female harmony in refrain. About the wonder of being a human being. (2:55) 8 * (FCC: “fucked”) Mid-tempo. Mock protest song, protesting nothing in particular. (2:26) 9 Slow, simple folk ballad. A bit Celtic with banjo and fiddle. A bit sentimental. (3:50) 10 (FCC: “shit”) Mid-fast. Goof-ball song about having a baby – or not. Oom-pa-pa. (2:32) 11 Mid-tempo. Very folkie with acoustic guitar & fiddle. Not as good as some others. (3:46) 12 * Mid-tempo. Classic folk song structure: guitar & tambourine. About going to a concert in Latvia and learning a lesson about freedom. Simple but inspiring. (3:11) One song from each of this artist’s first 3 albums, added to this CD’s U.S. version: 13 (FCC: “shit” “fucking”) Mid-tempo. Very folkie. Getting high at a music festival. (3:23) 14 * Mid-fast. On the road, looking for America. Much of what’s both wonderful & ridiculous in country music. Old-time string-band feel. (3:29) 15 ** (FCC: “fucking” 90% sure) Mid-tempo. Starts simple, grows. Female rap (quite good) in the middle. Is the world just crazy or are we being manipulated? (4:38) |
