TERENCE BLANCHARD: Magnetic
Blue Note, 2013
MODERN JAZZ – This eclectic set from trumpeter Blanchard runs from bop to ballads, all through a futuristic prism that’s not afraid of electronics or playing around with form. Each member of the core quintet contributes at least one composition, and guest stars include bass legend Ron Carter (1,3), saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (3,4) and guitarist Lionel Loueke (4,5,9), all making for a fresh, lively program.
All very good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 10
1. 7:03 – dark futuristic pulse-groove; sax grinds, heavy fx on trumpet solo
2. 7:59 – melancholy ballad: drifting piano & sax, builds up, reaches high
3. 7:30 – midtempo, playfully twisted neo-bop: bass/horn dialogues are fun
4. 10:31 – starts with great, loping/rolling world-jazz feel, opens up for solos; trumpet gets spiky and aggressive, piano & guitar re-ground it
5. 8:43 – weird soundscape to slow hallucinatory creep; trumpet & guitar solos
6. 7:21 – 2-minute drum solo intro, then bristling, edgy modern groove
7. 4:54 – trippy: piano steps, then runs, sideways through a hall of mirrors
8. 4:31 – thoughtful, in oblique angles; good piano, straight trumpet; fades to…
9. 2:35 – …effects heavy trumpet in a scattered funk-fusion groove, ends early
10. 6:56 – angular but boppish, bright horns/piano expand on a simple theme
