Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend

Whatever happened to ISIS? They hooked up with Deftones vocalist and became Palms: Heavy/light, lush/sparse, ugly/beautiful music that defined art heavy rock in the late 90’s. Before everyone went “psyche” the 90’s evolved to Isis. Big dramatic guitars and drums, soaring guitars, soaring everything. Heavy heavy stuff contrasted with beauty. RIYL: Sigur Ros, Jesu, Hella, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky. Long tracks, as always, do that thing where they start quiet then build, go back etc. Conclusion: This stuff takes on a very accessible/indie rock take because of the vocals. Don’t expect any screamo.

(Big fans don’t miss the 7” I ripped to CD for the library: LOGA – Isis before they were Isis, when they were a trio of seemingly 18 year old boys I stumbled upon at the Middle East in Cambridge playing to a crowd of 20 in 1997. Its awesome)

1) (7:56) very pretty sounding to start, vocals appear and the heaviness sets in, epic
2) (6:41) pretty, almost cheesy indie feel, but heavy lushness
3) (9:58) meandering march feel, picks up heavy of course, vocals betray the fact they’ve been living in LA too long
4) (6:57) eesh, a power ballad? Kinda sucky, I guess the LA industry will do this to you, avoid like plague
5) (5:44) another thing bordering on power ballad, the music is serene and gorgeous
6) (9:41) cheesy vocs fall to the wayside and this evolves to a lovely wash and drone wall of drums, beauty
