ETIENNE CHARLES: Creole Soul
Culture Shock, 2013

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Originally from Trinidad, trumpeter Etienne Charles brings a strong pan-Caribbean strain to this varied set, with hints of calypso, kongo, and other styles woven into a soulful jazz sound. His trumpet playing is strong and clear with a sharp bite, while the friendly rhythms keep things hopping.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 7, 9, 10

2. 6:26 – uptempo afro-caribbean groove alternates with slower soul breaks
3. 5:21 – light, buoyant groove with bright keyboard & bubbling horn solos
4. 5:55 – relaxed rocksteady swing: inviting groove, but bass solo gets lost
5. 6:31 – smooth island groove: uptempo rhythm, solos add depth, cool chant
6. 6:03 – gentle ballad, sweet trumpet tone, picks up swinging momentum
7. 5:42 – Thelonious Monk riff with a mellow calypso touch, deflating solos
8. 4:54 – Bob Marley ballad, gentle & casual, reggae beat emerges midway
9. 6:52 – soulful modern jazz: rich colors, subtle nuances, relaxed solos
10. 4:53 – trumpet/piano duet: an open, flowing ballad conversation
11. 3:26 – cute tune, fun carnival rhythm, sax & trumpet hop along
