MIKE VLATKOVICH: Succulence of Abstraction
Thankyou, 2013
AVANT-JAZZ – Trio of trombone, bass & drums, recorded live in two continuous sets. These are like extended medleys, so be warned: tracks start and end “mid-stream,” not always on the changes. The music is accessible but subversive, with Vlatkovitch warping his lines into wobbly-floppy things propped against friendly drum rhythms and frequent bass-solo meanderings. The overall vibe is upbeat. Maybe pick a spot at random, fade in, play a track or two, then fade out.
Fo’s Picks: 14 stands alone, otherwise fade in/out at will
1. 2:23 – warped bluesy march
2. 3:57 – snappy strut & stroll
3. 5:29 – casual mosey gets quiet
4. 2:05 – brisk & snappy
5. 3:00 – relaxed, then sneaky
6. 7:08 – jabbing; agile drum breaks
7. 3:46 – very quiet and slow
8. 5:15 – surge, then sly sneak
9. 3:33 – uptempo roll & hopscotch
10. 1:58 – jab, duck, weave
11. 7:54 – angular stroll, cool bass
12. 3:48 – mosey with arco bass
13. 2:23 – furtive, with little growls
14. 4:23 – catchy oddball groove
15. 2:06 – slow, moody, applause
