New one from these power-poppy, slightly punky godfathers and godmother of indie rock. Bittersweet feelings abound; many of the songs deal with death and the frustration surrounding it. Lyrics celebrate the good, mundane times. Solid, straightforward pop-rock with raspy/high vox and nice guitar flourishes. As someone who wasn't aware during their more iconic work, the mood strongly reminds me of recent Mountain Goats albums (also on Merge). Tracks are consistently worth playing, depending on their mood/your show.
1 (3:25) Acoustic intro, yearning; amps up,
*2 (2:00) "I hate music," the big single in heavy rotation on your favorite indie satellite station. Catchy and upbeat while really driving home frustration with death. Catchy, riffy, classic rock vibe but more sincere
3 (3:10) Slower intro, nice bassline, snotty vox detached through effects
4 (1:15) Punky, fast one; pounding rhythm, repetitive vox, 2 solos
5 (4:44) Upbeat, pop-indie-punky, a little forlorn
*6 (3:09) Midtempo pop with punk touches, Mediterranean nostalgia
7 (3:25) Upbeat poppy sections meet a loud, traffic horn rhythm guitar. Bizarro version of early Superchunk meets early Yo La Tengo
8 (3:28) (FCC: BULLSHIT) Slower, rockin, summery feeling and lyrics- baseball, etc.
9 (3:25) Catchy pop-rock, ba-da-da-da-da-da's, layers of vox
**10 (3:27) Killer power pop anthem, lyrics alter between longing/sound check imagery, quintessential track from the album
11 (6:10) Slow burner, "what can we do"
