Mike Scott & Friends “Home Sweet Home (Civil War Era Songs)” Label: Rural Rhythm Records Joseph Reviewed 12/11/13 These are some of the most popular tunes from the Civil War period performed by some of Nashville’s top musicians, including Adam Steffey on mandolin, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle, Rob Ickes on dobro, and Tim Stafford on guitar. All instrumental. Great musical taste in evidence by the stellar cast, including Mike Scott on banjo. 1 – (4:33) The Girl I Left Behind Me* Mid, pennywhistle & accordion are lovely additions. 2 – (3:50) Soldier’s Joy* Mid-tempo, seamless, nice solos throughout. 3 – (3:22) Bill Cheatham Mid-tempo, good workmanlike version of the classic fiddle tune. 4 – (2:23) Battle Hymn Of The Republic* Mid-tempo, nicely done. 5 – (3:50) Home Sweet Home* Scruggs tuners get a workout on this banjo classic. 6 – (4:40) Ashokan Farwell* Slow, modal tune, fiddler Jay Unger’s composition, pretty. 7 – (2:57) Swing Low, Sweet Chariot* Up-tempo rendition, very catchy and great banjo. 8 – (3:17) Turkey In The Straw Another good rendition of a classic, Bryan Sutton on guitar. 9 – (3:10) Banks Of The Ohio Mid-tempo, soft and tasty. 10 – (3:33) Camptown Races Mid-to-up tempo, nice mandolin break by Adam Steffey. 11 – (3:47) Bonaparte’s Retreat Mid, another workmanlike effort. 12 – (3:28) Buffalo Gals Another straight-ahead version of a classic, kinda foursquare. 13 – (3:29) Angeline The Baker* More like it, sweet Aubrey Haynie fiddle & dulcimer. 14 – (5:04) The Battlefield Slow tempo, reminiscent of “Down In The Willow Garden.” |
