APERTURISTIC TRIO: Truth and Actuality
Inner Circle, 2013

MODERN JAZZ – Pianist James Weidman is the primary force behind this tightly-meshed trio of veteran players, writing 6 of the 8 tunes. It’s a varied set, but all three of these guys (Weidman, Harvie S on bass and Steve Williams on drums) favor a lyrical approach that makes the tunes feel so comfortable you might not notice their odd shapes at first.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 7, 8

1. 4:56 – catchy rolling/chugging groove; piano prances playfully on top
2. 5:42 – relaxed urban stroll, a warm & friendly feel, bass solo
3. 5:07 – snappy strut: drums in center, piano asserts itself later, bass solo
4. 8:22 – optimistic: bass leads, piano sidles in, rises to crashing peak
5. 7:39 – introspective trio groove, opens up for improv middle, bashing end
6. 6:40 – oblique, reaching, stiff-edged with a hint of bolero bravado
7. 8:00 – very steady, boppish stroll with angular piano line
8. 6:53 – tender Stevie Wonder ballad, fragile melody but a solid core
