WILL BERNARD: Just Like Downtown
Posi-Tone, 2013

MODERNIZED SOUL-JAZZ – Nice little guitar-organ-sax-drums combo puts a updated spin on a classic sound. Bernard’s classic guitar and John Ellis’s earthy sax/clarinet make a solid connection, whether they’re bopping away or staying low & bluesy. Brian Charrette keeps it simple on organ, and drummer Rudy Royston finds a tasty midpoint between bashing & gently nudging things along. A very appealing disc!

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 8

1. 4:51 – cool-toned, greasy midtempo groover, very fine guitar/sax play
2. 5:38 – lazy & slinky, with an easygoing bounce, a fun li’l ditty
3. 5:19 – uptempo bop burner: sax jumps, guitar & organ glide smoothly
4. 4:45 – Zeppelin cover! cheesy but in a good way: a groovy retro sound
5. 5:23 – relaxed, introspective ballad: calm and casual w/bass clarinet
6. 5:24 – jumpy modern-bop: twitchy repetitive riff under spiky solos
7. 6:23 – unrecognizable show tune: hopscotch riff, island guitar, bass clarinet
8. 5:16 – speedy “four on six” riff sets up some upbeat, tasty solos
9. 2:25 – relaxed, folksy meditation… wanders through interesting changes
