Your Imaginary Friend Reviewed 2013-10-23 | ||
Perfect mix of experimental noise, ambiance, plodding doom metal. Jarboe era mid 80’s Swans crossed with Wolf Eyes, Sun ((O))), Boris, and Nadja. Heavy as heaven, with lovely angelic female touches that bring to mind early 4AD Records (Dead Can Dance?) contrasted with satanic screamo disturbing lyrics/vocals that are set deep in the mix, thereby avoiding the “screamo metal” moniker. This is some truly amazing stuff, scratches that itch that Swans did in 1985, Sunn did in 2003, Nadja did in 2008. No discernible FCCs (or lyrics for that matter, mostly) 1) (3:16) swirling atmospheric tones w/ fem chant-like vocs, very 4AD 2) (6:59) killer noise drone intro, then full on dramatic doom plod a la late 80’s Swans, screamo distorto vocs appear after a few moments, deep in mix 3) (3;46) super cool soundbed of noise/atmosphere, creepy sample w/ plod beat followed by angels in the rafters choral drama, screamo vocs 4) (5:06) hits the heavy plod from start, somber strings appear intensifying the drama 5) (2:57) galloping pounding thrash goes halftime to become the plod you requested 6) (2:30) somber solo cello and strings with discernable female vocs, very 4AD as it builds w/ crushing soundbed, no beat 7) (4:54) heres a rocker: mid paced head nodder 8) (4:27) a different type of plod, more gated or electronic feel, builds into layers 9) (3:11) white noise buried intro where as the track progresses things start crawling out of the grave into another great plod w/ some interesting rhythmic stuff happening later 10) (6:59) begins w/ pounding near thrashout, quickly ends into a looping kick ass noise that becomes the mother of all plods, ends cold with noise drone |
